If you or a loved one struggles with addiction and has a GEHA Health Insurance plan, you may be wondering if you’re covered for drug and alcohol treatment. GEHA offers a wide range of coverage options, often depending on your specific plan. They may cover all the costs, or at least some of them.

Geha plans are also recognized for a wide provider network and resources to support healthy lifestyle programs and ongoing care management. This ensures federal employees and retirees have access to the healthcare services, including addiction treatment and mental health therapy.

What is GEHA Health Insurance?

GEHA stands for Government Employees Health Association, Inc. It exclusively serves current and former federal employees, retired military members, and their families. GEHA provides access to providers nationwide, often covering both physical and mental health treatment.

The amount of coverage you have varies greatly based on your state, whether the facility is in- or out-of-network, the length of your stay, and your insurance plan.

GEHA Health Plans have caps on the coinsurance and deductibles their clients must pay each year, so if your plan covers specialty treatment, your out-of-pocket payments will not be more than the following, based on your plan:

Standard plan in-network: $5,000

Standard plan out-of-network: $7,000

High option in-network: $4,000

High option out-of-network: $6,000

HDHP option for individual plans: $5,000

HDHP option for family plans: $10,000

GEHA Benefits, Coverage, and Plans

Let’s look closer at some of these plans and what they offer. For 2025, some of the most common health plans provided through GEHA include [1]:

  1. Standard Plan: Lower deductible and more predictable copays for commonly used services. This also covers prescription medications and mental health support to an extent. Standard plans often cover outpatient addiction treatment, therapy sessions, and sometimes medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
  2. High Option Plan: Maximum coverage for brand-name and specialty prescription drugs, low copays for primary care doctors, mental health professionals, and addiction. This plan also offers a health rewards program to encourage healthy behaviors with financial incentives. These plans often cover most levels of addiction care, including detox, inpatient rehab, and ongoing outpatient treatment or specialized therapy.
  3. High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP): Lower premiums, but higher deductibles, often are best for those who want to save on monthly costs and can afford upfront payments. Best for those who need limited or mild addiction treatment. HDHP plans also offer the ability to contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA).

Choosing between plans mostly depends on your anticipated treatment intensity, prescription drug needs, and budget preference for premiums vs. out-of-pocket costs. GEHA is also integrated with Medicare supplemental plans for retirees to increase benefits and reduce out-of-pocket costs.

What Level of Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Does GEHA Cover?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates that almost all health plans in the US, including GEHA, must cover at least a portion of the cost of substance abuse treatment. Substance use disorder (SUD) falls under the classification of mental and behavioral health, considered an essential benefit under the ADA [2].

Depending on the severity of your addiction, you may require a certain level of addiction treatment. GEHA Health typically provides coverage for the following addiction treatment programs:

  • Detox: Supervision during the withdrawal phase of recovery overseen by a licensed medical team.
  • Inpatient Rehab/Residential Treatment: Live-in, 24/7 inpatient care that can last several weeks to months.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): This is a step-down from inpatient care where individuals attend treatment during the day on most days of the week, but return home in the evening.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): IOP provides a balance of structure and flexibility, clients usually attend treatment sessions for 3 to 4 days a week, for a few hours at a time.
  • Outpatient Programs and Aftercare: This might consist of therapy sessions 1-2 times  a week, case management, ongoing medication management, and support groups.

What Type of Mental Health Treatment Does GEHA Cover?

Mental health care is an essential benefit covered by the ACA, and GEHA typically covers mental health diagnoses, substance use disorders, and dual diagnosis (addiction and a co-occurring mental health disorder). GEHA covers a wide range of mental health conditions as covered in the DSM-5, the manual psychiatrists use to diagnose mental health conditions. Some of these include depression, anxiety, trauma disorders, bipolar disorder, and ADHD.

Coverage for treatment depends widely on your plan, level of need, and whether the facility, therapist, or treatment provider is in-network. Typical mental health therapies such as CBT, DBT, and EMDR are typically covered by insurance, as well as many first-line mental health medications.

For specialized mental health treatments, it’s best to speak with an admissions specialist who can connect with your insurance provider and verify benefits.

If your plan doesn’t cover the level of care or the specific recovery services you need, don’t lose hope. Consider asking the treatment facility whether they offer payment plans, scholarships, or other financing options, such as sliding-scale fees.
