Anxiety and Addiction Treatment in Arizona
Rated 5/5 on Google from 23 reviews
Most men do not call it anxiety. They call it being wound up, on edge, or not being able to shut his brain off at night.
AnchorPoint is a Christ-centered residential program for men in Prescott, Arizona, where anxiety and substance use are treated as one problem, because in most men that is exactly what they are.

w Anxiety Turns Into Substance Use
Anxiety is a body problem before it is a thinking problem. A nervous system running hot does not respond to being told to calm down.
So a man finds what works. Two drinks take the edge off before dinner. A benzodiazepine makes the meeting survivable. Marijuana finally lets him sleep.
For a while it works, and that is the trap. Nothing that fails on the first try becomes an addiction.
Then tolerance increases. The dose that used to quiet the alarm no longer does, and the anxiety that shows up between doses is worse than what he started with. Now he is not medicating anxiety. He is medicating withdrawal.
What This Looks Like in the Men We Serve
- Waking with an elevated heart rate, yet no memory of a nightmare
- Rehearsing a conversation forty times before having it, then avoiding it
- Anger that arrives faster than it used to, usually at the loved ones
- Needing a drink before a family event, a job site, or a phone call
- Chest tightness and a tense stomach
- Saying yes to everything at work without slowing down to think
Panic, Generalized Anxiety, and Social Anxiety in Men
Anxiety does not arrive in one form, and the form matters, because each one gets self-medicated differently.
Panic Disorder. It peaks in minutes and convinces a man he is having a cardiac event. Many of the men here have already had the emergency room visit, the normal electrocardiogram, and the discharge paperwork with no real explanation.
Generalized anxiety. A constant low-grade worry that never resolves and never has a single subject. This is the one most often handled with substances.
Social anxiety. Dread of being watched, judged, or embarrassed. Drinking becomes a prerequisite for anything social, which is why it is the presentation most often mistaken for a substance problem alone.
Health anxiety. Repeated scans and appointments that keep coming back clean, and relief that lasts about a week before the next symptom takes its place.
Sorting out which pattern a man is running is part of the assessment, because the treatment plan changes accordingly.
Why Anxiety Hits Veterans and First Responders Hard
In these professions, anxiety is not a symptom to report. It is a liability. Naming anxiety out loud risks a fitness-for-duty review, so many men avoid discussing it, allowing the condition to go untreated for decades.
Meanwhile, the job supplies its own accelerators. Rotating shifts wreck the sleep that anxiety already disrupts, and alcohol is often the only decompression the culture openly sanctions.
So the pattern is set: hold it together on shift, take the edge off after, and never put a name on any of it.
AnchorPoint was co-founded by Brendan McDonough, a first responder who came through the aftermath of losing 19 brothers and the years of post-traumatic stress and addiction that followed. The program was built by men who needed one.
The NeuroFaith® Model Applied to Anxiety
Our clinical foundation is the NeuroFaith® model, as developed by Dr. Jeffrey E. Hansen, PhD. It brings neuroscience and trauma research together with Christ-centered spiritual renewal.
On the neuroscience side, anxiety is treated as a miscalibrated threat detector rather than a character flaw. A man learns to read his own physical signals accurately and regulate his nervous system without reaching for drugs or alcohol.
On the spiritual side, NeuroFaith™ goes after the load underneath the worry: the conviction that every outcome rests on him and that letting go of the grip means everything falls. For a man carrying that, surrender is not a religious formality. It is the most direct relief available to him.
The two sides are not sequential. A man cannot think his way out of a nervous system in alarm, and a regulated nervous system still leaves him carrying a weight that was never his to hold alone.
Therapies That Address Anxiety and Substance Use Together
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Anxiety runs on prediction. CBT gets a man to challenge those predictions against what actually happens and then dismantles the behaviors propping them up, starting with the drink before the event he is dreading.
HeartMath™
HeartMath™ makes a man's own physiology visible on a screen, using live feedback from his heart rhythm. He learns to bring himself down on demand, in about the time it takes to sit in a truck and breathe, and he keeps the skill without needing an appointment or a prescription.
Polyvagal-Informed Therapy
We teach men the mechanics of the alarm system so a pounding chest reads as physiology doing its job rather than a heart attack starting. Take the fear out of the symptom, and the symptom shrinks.
Group Therapy
For a man whose anxiety is social, group is not the container for treatment. It is the treatment. Being known by ten other men, on purpose, is exposure work with something valuable on the other side of it.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Some anxiety is a present-day alarm attached to trauma. Where that is the case, EMDR reprocesses the memory s
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
The vigilant part of a man is not an enemy. It has been scanning for threats and keeping him employed and alive for years. IFS helps him communicate with those internal parts instead of fighting them or shutting down.
Biblical 12-Step Integration and Discipleship
A man who has been holding the entire weight of his life in both hands sets some of it down, in a room of men doing the same, anchored in Scripture and honest accountability.
How Our Campus Supports Anxiety Recovery
Physical training is one of the best-supported non-pharmaceutical tools for anxiety, and it happens to be the one men are most willing to do. That is not incidental to how this program is built.

The high desert around Prescott adds something a gym cannot. Elevation, heat, and long distances make a man uncomfortable on purpose, and then he finishes anyway. That is the exact lesson anxiety refuses to teach him: discomfort is survivable, and it passes.
- Outdoor adventure programming across the Arizona high desert, where discomfort is scheduled rather than avoided
- Equine therapy, where an animal reads a man’s internal state and refuses to cooperate with tension, making regulation the only path forward
- Daily gym access, strength training, and a CrossFit partnership that give the nervous system somewhere productive to discharge
None of this is framed as self-care. It is training, and the thing being trained is a man’s capacity to stay in his own body when it is uncomfortable.
What Comes After Residential
Residential at AnchorPoint runs 30 to 45 days. Length is set by where a man actually is, not by an intake calendar.
Through our brother program, Holdfast Recovery, men continue in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and sober living, so the first hard week at home is not done alone.
Families are part of that stretch as well. The wife who has spent years managing his moods needs her own footing, and the men who rebuild those relationships deliberately hold their recovery longer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Anxiety Causing the Drinking or Substance Use, or the Other Way
By the time a man reaches us, it is usually both running in a loop and untangling; which came first changes very little about the plan. We treat the loop.
How Long Before the Anxiety Actually Improves?
Most men feel the physical piece begin to settle in the second or third week, once sleep returns. The thinking patterns take longer and continue improving well past discharge, which is what the step-down programming is for.
Can I Keep Taking the Medication I Am Prescribed?
Bring everything you take to the assessment, including what was prescribed by someone else and what you have been getting elsewhere. Our medical team makes that call individually. The goal is a supervised taper rather than a swap.
I Have Had Panic Attacks and Been Told My Heart Is Fine. Is That Treated Here?
Yes, and it is one of the most common presentations we see. Once a man understands the mechanism behind the sensation, the attacks lose most of their power over him.
Can My Wife Be Involved?
Yes. Family participation is part of the program, and it matters more here than most men expect, because anxiety is rarely confined to the man carrying it.
Do I Have to Be Christian to Attend AnchorPoint?
No. Willingness is the only requirement. Plenty of men arrive skeptical, some arrive with a faith they walked away from years ago, and some find it here for the first time.
Can I Come From Out of State?
Yes. Men come to us from across the country, and the distance is often an asset. Being out of range of the same bar, the same group chat, and the same pressures gives a man room to do the work of recovery.

I’ve known the team at Anchor Point for years. The recovery community has been waiting for their residential program to open and after touring it exceeded all expectations. As a Christian man in recovery myself I’m blown away by Holdfast/Anchor Points integration of treatment and the principles of Christ. We see success story after success story coming from their program. Thanks for all you do to advance the Kingdom and restore men to health.

After years of struggling with substance abuse and deep-rooted trauma, my loved one was lost, hopeless, and disconnected from both himself and God. AnchorPoint not only helped him find recovery, but also led him back to faith and a completely new way of living. The compassion, patience, and dedication of the team is unlike anything we’ve experienced. They didn’t just treat symptoms, they helped him heal from the inside out. Today he’s thriving, living a healthy spiritually grounded lifestyle. We are forever grateful for the role AnchorPoint played in this transformation.
