Cocaine is a powerful stimulant that has been used recreationally for decades despite its physical and psychological risks. Its effects cause short bursts of energy, confidence, and euphoria, but are brief and can quickly lead to repeated use.

One of the most common terms used to describe cocaine is an “8-ball,” which refers to 3.5 grams of cocaine. Understanding what an 8-ball represents is important because slang terms can minimize how much of the drug is actually involved and obscure the level of risk.

An amount like an 8-ball can expose a person to large doses, increased tolerance, and a higher likelihood of overdose.

What Is An 8-Ball of Cocaine?

An “8-ball” of cocaine is a slang term referring to one-eighth of an ounce (approximately 3.5 grams) of cocaine. Cocaine is typically sold as a fine white powder and is most commonly used by snorting through the nose, though it may also be injected or smoked when processed into other forms [1].

An 8-ball is a large amount and is often associated with repeated use over a short period or distribution among multiple users. Possessing or using an 8-ball significantly increases health risks due to both dose size and frequency of exposure. Cocaine acts on the central nervous system by increasing levels of dopamine, leading to intense but short-lived feelings of euphoria, energy, and alertness.

However, larger quantities of cocaine and excess use raise the likelihood of adverse effects such as cardiovascular strain, anxiety, paranoia, and the development of substance use disorder.

Where Does The Term 8-Ball Come From?

The term “8-ball” originates from its literal meaning of one-eighth of an ounce, a unit of weight historically used in the illegal drug trade. The slang developed as a shorthand way to reference this measurement without explicitly naming the drug or amount, allowing users and dealers to communicate discreetly.

Over time, “8-ball” became most commonly associated with cocaine, though it has also been used to describe similar quantities of other illicit substances.

Other Common Slang Terms for Cocaine

Other slang terms you may have heard cocaine referred to include:

  • Coke
  • Snow
  • Blow
  • Coca
  • Yayo
  • Nose candy

What Does An 8 Ball Of Cocaine Look Like?

An 8-ball often looks like a small, hard, round ball of white powder. It is often sold in plastic bags or wrapped in tin foil. The color and texture of the 8-ball of cocaine depend on how it was manufactured.

Pure cocaine is often bright white with a very powdery texture. Cocaine that is off-white, or crystalized, may be cut with adulterants such as amphetamines, baking soda, or caffeine.

Can You Overdose From An 8 Ball?

Yes, it is possible to overdose on an 8-ball of cocaine, and the risk is high. An 8-ball represents a large quantity, and using it over a short period can overwhelm the body’s cardiovascular and nervous systems.

Cocaine overdose can occur suddenly and may involve dangerously elevated heart rate and blood pressure, irregular heart rhythms, seizures, hyperthermia, stroke, or cardiac arrest.

Because cocaine purity varies widely and is often mixed with other substances, including fentanyl, individuals may unknowingly consume a much more potent dose than expected. Repeated use within a short timeframe further increases overdose risk due to cumulative toxicity, even if the amount taken at one time seems “typical” to the user.

What Is The Street Price of an 8 Ball?

The street price of an 8-ball of cocaine varies widely across the United States due to differences in regional demand, supply chains, and purity levels. On average, they typically cost between $120 and $300 on the street in the U.S.

Studies estimate that heavy users can spend thousands of dollars annually on cocaine, causing significant financial strain on the user once they have reached active addiction [2].

How Long Does An 8 Ball Last for Cocaine Users?

How long an 8-ball of cocaine lasts depends largely on the individual’s tolerance, pattern of use, and severity of addiction. For someone with cocaine use disorder, an 8-ball may be consumed sometimes within a single day or even several hours, especially during binge use.

Cocaine’s effects are short-lived, often lasting 15 to 30 minutes when snorted, which can drive repeated dosing in an attempt to maintain euphoria. This cycle of frequent redosing increases both the quantity used and the speed at which a supply is depleted.

As addiction progresses, tolerance develops, meaning the person requires larger and more frequent amounts to achieve the same effect. What might last several days for an occasional user may last only a night for someone in active addiction.

This consumption pattern is a warning sign and is associated with higher risks of overdose, cardiovascular complications, sleep deprivation, and psychological distress. In treatment settings, how quickly a person goes through an amount like an 8-ball often helps clinicians assess the severity of use.
