What is adventure therapy for addiction?
Adventure therapy for men is experiential addiction therapy that uses outdoor physical activity as part of treatment: at AnchorPoint, hiking, the gym, horses and community outings, led by staff.
Every activity is led by staff, including fitness and the gym and equine work.
Benefits of adventure therapy in addiction treatment
Sitting in a chair, the same thoughts go round and round. Out on a trail or under a bar, they loosen. Your legs get tired, your head gets quiet, and the talking you couldn’t do this morning comes easier.
That’s why outdoor therapy for addiction is part of the work here, every week, from your first one.

Outdoor activities: hiking, fitness and equine work
Four kinds of adventure-based therapy are on the schedule, and every one of them is led by staff. You hike in the pines and granite, train in the gym, work with the horses on the ground, and get out on days off site. You start at your level and go from there.

How adventure therapy supports addiction therapy
A hike is part of the work. Something comes up out there: the hill you wanted to quit on, the horse that stood its ground, the man who waited for you at the top.
You bring it back to the house and talk it through in group, with the men who were out there with you. That’s where it turns from a good day outside into part of your recovery.

What to bring for outdoor therapy
The house sits about a mile high. Mornings can be cool, summers are milder than in Phoenix, and winter can bring snow. Pack for all of it, and keep it simple. There’s laundry in the house, so a week of clothes is enough.
- Hiking shoes
- Gym clothes
- Layers
- A warm jacket
- Phone and charger
- A journal

“Anchor Point Recovery helped me through one of the hardest times in my life. The staff treated me like a real person, not just another client, and that made a huge difference. Everyone was supportive, easy to talk to, and genuinely cared about my progress. The environment felt safe and positive, and I always felt like people wanted to see me do better. I’m really grateful for the experience and would absolutely recommend them to anyone needing help.”

Adventure therapy FAQ
- Adventure therapy uses physical activity outdoors as part of addiction treatment. At AnchorPoint that means hiking, the gym, ground work with horses and outings off site, all led by staff and built into a month of residential treatment. What comes up out there gets talked through in group back at the house. It’s part of the work from your first week.
- Four things are on the weekly schedule: hiking in the pines and granite around AnchorPoint, training in the gym in the house, ground work with horses, and outings off site. Every one of them is led by staff, and you start at your own level. Staff show you how, whatever your experience.
- Every level is welcome, and you start where you are, whether you train every week or it’s been years since your last hike. Staff lead every activity, and you build from there over the month.
- Yes. The outdoors is part of every week from your first one, alongside group, one-on-one therapy and 12-step meetings. It starts in your first week.
- Equine work is ground-based work with horses: grooming, leading and setting boundaries, with both feet on the ground and staff beside you the whole time. Staff show you everything from the start, so first-timers fit right in. It’s led by staff alongside a therapist, and what comes up goes back to group.
- Every activity is led by staff, and you go at your own level, so you set the pace for what your body can do. Nursing is on site 24/7 in the house. If you have an injury or a health condition, tell admissions when you call so the team knows before you arrive.
- Adventure therapy at AnchorPoint is part of residential treatment for adult men, 18 and up. You live in a house in Arizona with other men, head out on the trails with staff, and come back to the work at the house. Wilderness therapy is a different type of program, mostly for teens.
- Yes. Every activity ties back to group. The hill you wanted to quit on or the horse that stood its ground gets talked through with the men who were out there with you. That’s how a good day outside becomes part of your recovery.
- Bring hiking shoes, gym clothes, layers and a warm jacket. The house sits about a mile high, so mornings can be cool, summers are milder than in Phoenix, and winter can bring snow. There’s laundry in the house, so a week of clothes is enough.
- Around AnchorPoint, a small house for men in Arizona, about a mile high in the pines. Granite, lakes and national forest sit all around. Men come here from all 50 states: you fly into Phoenix and admissions handles the pickup.
- Adventure therapy gives stress somewhere to go, helps sleep come back and gives the week a routine to show up for. It also makes talking easier: men who go quiet in a chair often open up on a trail or beside a horse. At AnchorPoint, what comes up outside is talked through in group, so it becomes part of treatment.
- Yes, with staff. Regular community outings and hikes on the trails take you out of the house as part of the week, and staff lead every one. The doors are open, and you are here by choice.
- Adventure therapy at AnchorPoint is part of residential treatment, so coverage follows your plan’s residential benefits. Many private plans help pay for residential treatment, and we check your benefits for free, including out-of-network coverage, before you decide anything.
