How equine therapy helps addiction recovery
In horse therapy for addiction, the horse shows you what you bring. Walk in wound up and it backs off. Walk in steady and it stays. If you’re the man who hates talking about feelings, good: here the work starts before anyone says a word.

“Anchor Point Recovery helped me through one of the hardest times in my life. The staff treated me like a real person, not just another client, and that made a huge difference. Everyone was supportive, easy to talk to, and genuinely cared about my progress. The environment felt safe and positive, and I always felt like people wanted to see me do better. Equine therapy FAQ
- Equine therapy for addiction is therapy done with horses. At AnchorPoint it’s ground-based work only: you groom a horse, lead it on a rope and practice setting a clear boundary, with staff beside you and a therapist in the loop. What you notice gets talked through in group afterwards. It’s one part of a month of residential treatment for men.
- A horse responds to what you bring, more than what you say. Walk in wound up and it backs off; walk in steady and it settles beside you. That gives you an honest read on yourself, and practice in trust, patience and calm, clear leadership. You bring what came up back to group, where it becomes part of your treatment.
- Equine work at AnchorPoint is ground-based work with horses: grooming, leading and setting boundaries, with both feet on the ground every session. Staff are beside you the whole time, from the first brush to the last walk with the horse.
- Most men who come here are working with a horse for the first time. Staff show you everything from the start, and you stay on the ground the whole time. If you’re nervous around horses, that’s normal, and staff are right beside you.
- A session has four parts. You groom the horse to get close and calm, lead it side by side on a rope, and set a boundary that’s clear, steady and calm. Then you head back to the house and talk through in group what came up. You and the horse work it out together.
- It’s therapy. Equine work is led by staff alongside a therapist, and what happens with the horse gets talked through in group. It sits next to the trails and the gym as part of adventure therapy at AnchorPoint, and all of it ties back to the work you do in group and one-on-one.
- Yes. You stay on the ground with the horse, and staff are beside you the whole time, alongside a therapist. Staff teach you everything you need from your first session. Back at the house, nursing is on site 24/7.
- Yes. Equine work is part of the week in residential treatment, along with hiking, the gym and outings off site. It starts in your first week. Ask admissions how the week is laid out.
- That’s fine, and plenty of men here feel the same. With the horse, the work starts before anyone says a word. You bring what came up back to group when you’re ready, with men who have been where you are.
- Equine work is one part of residential treatment at AnchorPoint, so coverage follows your plan’s residential benefits. Many private plans help pay for residential treatment, and we check your benefits for free, including out-of-network coverage, before you decide anything.
- Yes. Equine work fits men early in recovery and further along, and it starts in your first week of residential treatment. The lessons in accountability, trust and reflection apply wherever you are. Staff guide every step, so you can start without any experience.
- Session length follows the weekly schedule, and every session has the same three parts: a calm introduction to the group and the horses, guided exercises on the ground with staff, and a reflection and debrief at the end. What you notice then goes back to group at the house.
